The Perfect Life

"Uncle Arnaud!" Caressa exclaimed at the sight of her uncle, and she ran over to give the man who raised her a hug. He wasn’t really her uncle, but she’d known him since she was very young. He was best friends with her father, and when her mother died in childbirth, her unfit father, who was addicted to drugs and alcohol, took it upon himself to try and bring up his baby girl. But, when the police went to arrest him for substance abuse, he fought them, and they had no choice but to shoot him.

Carrie, which was Caressa’s nickname, was six years old when it happened. But she’d grown up to be an amazing woman. Her hair was a vivid red, and her eyes were as blue as the planet Neptune. She was average height, and held herself up proud. This was definitely something that had attracted her husband, Axel, to her.

"It’s been so long since the last time we’ve seen each other! How have you been?"

"I’ve been great, Carrie," he said, giving his beautiful niece a hug. "How have you been, with the new baby and all? Hopefully she isn’t keeping you two up too late with ear infections and such things?"

"I’ve been doing great," she replied, her eyes glowing with happiness. "The baby hasn’t given us any problems yet. She’s as healthy has a horse. Of course, Axel has been helping a lot, so if anything did happen he’d be there."

"As I should be," Axel added as he walked into the living room and over to his beautiful wife. He had had a rough life, too, but everything changed when he and Carrie fell in love in high school. It seems impossible to find true love at the age of sixteen, but not for these two. When he graduated from high school, he decided to put his horrible life, filled with the loss of many friends, behind him. It was hard, but he told himself constantly that they chose to do the things that killed them, and it was not his fault.

One dark evening, as he was studying for his art finals, one of his old friends came to visit. His friend, who loved to go out party, wanted to take him out for the night, but Axel was very hesitant. Finally, he decided to join, but realized later that he’d made a mistake.

As time went by his friend got drunker and drunker, and then, when it was time to leave, he wanted to drive Axel home. But Axel, who knew the consequences of intoxicated driving, had refused to give him the keys. In his anger, his friend smashed a glass beer bottle over Axel’s head. The glass shattered, and fell to the floor. But one piece, which was about the size of a baby’s fist, slashed at his face, giving Axel a long and deep scar across his right cheek. He had thought, sadly, that Carrie wouldn’t love him anymore now that his handsome appearance was gone. How wrong he was.
